Ondo NANS Secures Immediate Action Following Protest Against Heavy-Duty Trucks In Akungba

The leadership of the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) Joint Campus Council, Ondo State Axis, led by Comrade Adekanye Mayomi Adeboye (INEC), in collaboration with the NANS Zone D leadership, ably represented by Comrade Adegoke Naheem, Deputy Coordinator, NANS Southwest, and the National Association of University Students (NAUS) national leadership, represented by Comrade Dr. Meshach Anthony Iyanuoluwa, Deputy National President (National and Campus Affairs), staged a peaceful protest on Thursday, 23rd October 2025, at the main gate of Adekunle Ajasin University, Akungba-Akoko (AAUA).

The protest was organized in response to the reckless activities of heavy-duty trucks plying the Ikare–Akungba road, which have continually resulted in tragic accidents and the loss of innocent lives, including students. The demonstration sought a lasting and permanent solution to the recurring menace caused by the removal of barricades and the alleged extortion by individuals collecting bribes from truck drivers to gain passage.

At the end of the peaceful protest, the leadership of NANS JCC Ondo Axis and NANS Zone D achieved a major breakthrough, as the barricades were immediately restored and reinforced, better and stronger right before the eyes of the students.

Following this development, the leadership further engaged the Ondo State Commissioner of Police, CP Adebowale Lawal, who assured the students’ body of a thorough investigation into the truck owner involved in the recent incident. The CP also promised to engage the Akungba traditional leadership to ensure that those responsible for removing barricades and extorting truck drivers are brought to justice.

In the same breath, the leadership of NANS JCC Ondo Axis sincerely appreciates the Governor of Ondo State, His Excellency Hon. Lucky Orimisan Aiyedatiwa, for swiftly swinging into action and demonstrating genuine concern for the safety of our students and citizens. His prompt attention and directive played a pivotal role in ensuring that immediate steps were taken to restore the barricades and prevent further tragedies.

We also extend deep appreciation to the Commissioner of Police, CP Adebowale Lawal, for his responsiveness, professionalism, and firm assurance that any truck driver caught plying the Akungba axis henceforth will be arrested, reaffirming the police command’s commitment to prioritizing the safety of lives and property in Ondo State.

The leadership of NANS JCC Ondo Axis further appreciates all security agencies, student leaders, and stakeholders who stood firm in the pursuit of justice and safety. We urge all students of AAUA and residents of Akungba to remain calm and law-abiding, as NANS JCC Ondo State Axis remains resolute and fully committed to defending the welfare, dignity, and safety of Nigerian students.

The safety of our students remains non-negotiable
