The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Ondo State has accused Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa of presiding over the steady collapse of the education sector in the state, describing his recent pronouncement at Rufus Giwa Polytechnic, Owo, as another empty promise meant to exploit students for political gain.
In a statement issued by the party’s Publicity Secretary, Barr. Jolade Aladetan, the PDP said the governor’s appearance at the institution’s Convocation ceremony on Saturday was yet another publicity stunt lacking sincerity and substance. The party recalled that about 18 months ago, Aiyedatiwa publicly announced the approval of ₦1.2 billion for projects at Olusegun Agagu University of Science and Technology, Okitipupa (OAUSTECH), but to date, not a single kobo has been released and no project has materialized.
Aladetan noted that this recurring pattern of unfulfilled promises has become the defining character of Aiyedatiwa’s administration. He lamented that tertiary institutions across the state are now symbols of neglect, poor funding, and infrastructural decay, while lecturers remain demoralized and students continue to learn under deplorable conditions. He added that instead of addressing these deep-rooted challenges, the governor has resorted to using schools and students as tools for political image laundering.
The PDP condemned what it described as deliberate deception and insensitivity by the current administration, accusing Aiyedatiwa of chasing headlines and photo opportunities rather than providing genuine leadership. The party said the governor’s approach to education has eroded the state’s once enviable academic reputation and endangered the future of thousands of young people.
“The future of Ondo State depends on the strength of its schools, not on empty promises or political theatrics,” Aladetan said. “Governor Aiyedatiwa’s failure to back his words with action has become a clear demonstration of misplaced priorities and disregard for the future of our youths. The people of Ondo deserve better.”
