Ondo PDP Set For Consensus State Congress

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Ondo State will later today hold its state congress in Akure, with strong indications that a consensus arrangement will define the exercise. Party stakeholders say the decision to opt for consensus is a deliberate effort to ensure unity ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Over the past weeks, leaders of the party from across the three senatorial districts have been locked in consultations aimed at producing a harmonized list of candidates for the state executive committee. The move is intended to avoid the bitter clashes that have weakened the PDP in previous congresses and left it vulnerable in past election cycles.

Party elders, including former elected officers, national and zonal party officers, and grassroots leaders, are said to have reached advanced stages in agreeing on key positions. A source within the party noted that the consensus arrangement is a “strategic sacrifice” to project cohesion and rebuild the party’s image before voters.

Analysts believe today’s congress will be a major test of the PDP’s internal discipline and its seriousness about presenting itself as a credible alternative to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) in Ondo State. Whatever emerges from Akure will likely shape the party’s campaign machinery as the road to 2027 gathers momentum.
