Ondo Citizen Writes ODSG, Files FOI Request on Igbokoda-Okitipupa Road Project

A concerned citizen, Mr. Wándé T. Àjàyí, has formally submitted a Freedom of Information (FOI) request to the Ondo State Ministry of Works and Infrastructure, seeking detailed information on the recently flagged-off Igbokoda-Okitipupa road dualization project.

The project, which was inaugurated by Governor Lucky Orimisan Aiyedatiwa to commemorate his first 100 days in office, has been described as a strategic economic initiative, especially in light of the proposed Ondo Deep Seaport.

In a letter dated June 2, 2025, and addressed to the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry, Mr. Ajayi requested full disclosure on five key areas: the total cost of the project, its approved duration, the contractors involved, supporting feasibility and environmental studies, and the funding sources.

“This request is made in the public interest and for the purpose of promoting transparency and accountability in public infrastructure development in Ondo State,” Mr. Ajayi stated in the letter, which was made available to the press.

The citizen further urged the government to respond in accordance with Section 4 of the FOI Act, which mandates a public institution to respond within seven days of receipt.

The dualization of the 27.5km Igbokoda-Okitipupa road is expected to ease traffic, boost trade and serve as a critical link to the state’s coastal corridor. However, public curiosity continues to grow around the cost and timeline of the ambitious project.

The FOI Act, signed into law in 2011, empowers Nigerian citizens to request information from any public institution, thereby enhancing transparency and participatory governance.
